Exploring the Intersection of Art, Faith and the Human experience

Exhibiting Artist, Roger Foster

Roger Foster is (formerly) best known in the Convergence community as a patron of the arts and a supporter of his artist wife, Pamela Underhill, and is a familiar face at various events at Convergence. Professionally Foster is a business consultant and former radio astronomer, but very few people know of Foster’s artistic work until now.

Roger Foster self-taught photography while still in school but never pursued it as anything more than a hobby, until recently. After more than a 25-year hiatus from photography, Foster bought a new DSLR camera in 2011. Since then, he has been experimenting with and learned more about the use of light, resolution, and particularly perspective in photography. Foster began to bring in his knowledge from his professional work as a radio astronomer to his photography.

Foster wanted to create images that had an impact and found himself unsatisfied with what he saw in traditional photography. The light in these images was often too narrow, either too dark or too light, there was not enough detail, and felt that there was no feeling for the scene; the image was not immersive. Using his skills as a radio astronomer, Foster started playing around and very quickly worked out a process, often shooting the same scene multiple times and going back and combining the images to create dynamic light. He also started shooting the same subject matter from different perspectives and combined those to make what he calls “little planets” as if looking at a subject projected onto a sphere called a stereographic projection. Foster also uses a process that involves shooting the same subject over time. Combining all these techniques Foster has created unique images of familiar subjects.

Foster has shown pieces in group shows at Alexandria City Hall, Del Ray Artisans, the Athenaeum, as well as Taste Art Gallery in DC. He won Best in Show twice at Del Ray Artisans. Most recently, Foster has also been playing with time lapse videos and will exhibit some at The Gallery @ Convergence.
