Exploring the Intersection of Art, Faith and the Human experience

Ordination

It’s been three weeks since my Ordination service. As others discover I am now a Minister, I am uplifted by numerous “Congratulations!” and opportunities to share my journey when they ask, “What is Ordination anyway?” That is an easy question: it is an affirmation of God’s calling to full time ministry. The more difficult question to answer is “So, do you feel any different?”

Yes, but not because of any science fiction gateway I passed through, or any magic trick other pastors performed. I feel different in several ways. Mostly, I feel affirmed and cherished. So many friends surprised me by coming to celebrate this lifetime commitment. Their presence, gifts and notes from the artistic project (now in a scrapbook) overwhelmed my heart with joy and gratitude. Thank you to everyone who participated that day, and for the previous years of encouragement and prayer.

Yes, I feel a new sense of urgency to share what Christ has meant to me and what God has done in my life. Although I was raised in the church and had a strong youth group as a teen, I left the church for many years, so I understand having a rebellious heart. Through God’s grace and not of my own accord (that is a wonderful but longer conversation!) I found my way back to a strong church family at Westwood Baptist in Springfield. I received my first calling as a Youth Leader and began seminary at John Leland Center. My mentors encouraged me to explore all opportunities.

Convergence was a new way to experience Jesus through the intersection of theology and the arts. I was here at the beginning in 2006, but felt there was more I could do than just being here Sundays, so I joined the staff in 2009. Being on campus daily exposed me to the arts in a deeper way; I began to write memoir and work through old issues. The Artist’s Way, Open Mic and Play Dates encouraged me to write poetry and explore my creative side. 2010-2011 was a difficult period of grief and loss, and this community prayed and walked me through it. I began to laugh again and sense God’s presence through play and creativity. Supporting emerging artists in the Gallery, Studios and Lab All Ages gave me a focus outside of myself. Not only have I learned more about the arts, but I have met such incredible people here!

Although my role dealt with Space and Facilities, being a part of the church allowed me to dig deeper into questions of faith, theology, philosophy, culture and service.

While at Convergence, I have grown emotionally and spiritually. Although my role dealt with Space and Facilities, being a part of the church allowed me to dig deeper into questions of faith, theology, philosophy, culture and service. Our Community Groups are designed for both spiritual inquiry and service. The trust, sharing and accountability of the members of those groups led to my ordination decision.

Do I feel different? Yes, I understand now how NorthStar Church Network contributed to my growth. Chairing the Executive Director Search Committee and Moderating the Board of Directors have been opportunities for me to learn practical leadership skills from experienced Pastors and mentors. I feel humbled yet more equipped to lead a church now.

Yes, I do feel different. I am more confident that God is directing my path. I am praying about where He is leading me beyond Convergence, and would appreciate your prayers for discernment. This journey of education and experience has helped me find a new voice, my calling and a vision. I plan to focus my ministry on helping families in crisis or transition, and hope to integrate all I have learned from life, seminary and my time at Convergence.
