The Gallery at Convergence
Date: July 21 – October 8, 2017
Reception and Book Signing: Sunday, September 17, 2017 5-7 PM

Convergence offers a dynamic invitation to challenge perspectives on art and faith in Disdain|Desire, a mind-expanding second look into a book many people think they know – the Bible. Large scale images of Anita Breitenberg’s new illustrated Gospel series will be on display in the Gallery at Convergence. These vivid and often incongruous images of MARK THIS!, WAY BACK!, HEAL ME!, and FACE IT! (Mark, Matthew, Luke and John) are composites of the old and new, the broken and whole, the destroyed and restored; a juxtaposition of the diminished and disdained with the delighted and desired.

Mark 12:28-34

For the past four decades, Anita Breitenberg has illustrated versus of Scripture and sought to broaden the appeal of contemporary Christian art to a wider and diversified audience by presenting it in a radically provocative manner. While serving with the UN in Bosnia in the mid-nineties, Ms. Breitenberg developed a concern for individuals from different cultures, and sought to find an artistic style to convey her spiritual journey to an audience with limited exposure to contemporary Christian images. The form of a mandala, representing the universe, was chosen as an appropriate structure for spiritual contemplation for a new audience. As a result, the works give an appearance of dream interpretations while stylistically incorporating kaleidoscopes and stained glass windows, respectively representing change and holiness. Anita Breitenberg’s works have been exhibited in The Museum of Biblical Art in Manhattan, Yale University and the Washington National Cathedral, and are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, Texas and Catholic University. Her art was reviewed in the New York Times and appeared on the cover of Commonweal Magazine.

Mark 7:24-30
