Opening Reception: Saturday, Apr. 12, 7-10 pm

ALEXANDRIA, VA, February 2014 – Convergence is proud to announce an exhibition of 3_28-3_29_14_Syria 2music & photography from Jason Hamacher’s Lost Origin Sound Series, and forthcoming book, Aleppo, Syria: Witness to an Ancient Legacy. From 2005-2010, Jason was granted unprecedented access to the Syrian city of Aleppo. He went to document ancient religious traditions and, inadvertently, captured the apex of Syria’s modernization before the eruption of civil war. Many of the people and places that appear in this exhibit have passed on, vanished, or been destroyed. Aleppo, Syria: Witness to an Ancient Legacy - Jason Hamacher’s book of photography, Aleppo, Syria: Witness To An Ancient Legacy, offers an unparalleled immersion into the one of the world’s oldest cities. Hamacher’s adventurist spirit, passion for people, and love of culture earned him the trust of Syrians across all socio-economic classes allowing him to truly capture the essence of the Syrian landscape and it’s people. All photographs appearing in Syria: Sacred Spaces. Ancient Prayers are from his book, which is in edit and due for publication at the end of 2014. LOST ORIGIN SOUND SERIES -  3_28-3_29_14_Syria 3Jason Hamacher created the Lost Origin Sound Series to introduce and share his archive of cultural relics with the world. He spent years traveling to Syria documenting the ancient prayers, hallowed rituals, and sacred spaces of the country's religious minorities. In 2005, Hamacher was granted permission to record the oldest chant traditions of the Syrian Orthodox Church, one of the earliest Christian communities. Smithsonian Folkways is scheduled to release an album of these sacred recordings at a date yet to be determined. Over the course of his travels, Hamacher was fortunate to record several albums worth of sacred music which are being released as a multi-volume series, Sacred Voices of Syria, showcasing ancient Sufi, Armenian, Syriac, and Assyrian musical traditions. The first album, “Ancient Sufi Invocations and Forgotten Songs from Aleppo” debuts on vinyl April 19 and CD & Digital May 6th.
