CRAVE 4 Proposal 3 – Suspended Animation

This CRAVE submission by Alison Sigethy is a large-scale public art installation, involving kinetic towers and projected light. The installation, which consists of five steel framed towers standing over 20- feet tall, was originally part of the Torpedo Factory’s 40th anniversary in 2014.
The art is a deep and engaging piece involved in engaging the community at the Torpedo Factory, she told us, “These towers provide interactive engagement between visitors from the community and the Torpedo Factory building. They not only recall the building’s history as a munitions factory by highlighting this once-functional architectural element, but also beckon guests to come closer to investigate the work and to explore the less trodden areas of the third floor studio spaces. Suspended Animation ignites the curiosity and imagination of its viewers as they attempt to interpret the movements and components within the work.”
Due to the draw of the kinetic structures, many visitors were drawn to inspect the workings, causing damage to the pieces. Alison’s goal is to rebuild the pieces with more durable structure, including glass panels, which would allow the art to be a more permanent structure.
Alison Sigethy graduated from Marymount University with degrees in interior design and art history. She was a commercial artist and Art Director before taking up glass full-time in 2007. Alison is a Torpedo Factory Resident Artist and faculty member at the Washington Arts Glass School. She has studied with artists Steve Kline, Elizabeth Mears, Richard La Londe, and Tim Tate.
