Pablo Picasso once said that “Every child is an artist. The problem is to remain an artist once we grow up.” The Silent World is a project by artist Isabel Cureux, curator of recent Convergence gallery show Unburied. The Silent World will ask the questions: what happens to the creative human mind as we get older and how do the rigid societal expectations associated with education and creative ability morph our creative processes?
The inspiration for this project comes from Jacques Cousteau, who pioneered deep sea exploration, Cousteau was a searcher of the unknown, and The Silent World will follow in those footsteps of chasing the unknown through art. The Project will visit schools in the area from preschool to post graduate, with the following prompt – “95% of the ocean is still unexplored. Make something that’s never been seen before that you think lives in the deep ocean.”
The Silent World is a very community focused endeavor, and will culminate in a gallery show featuring selections from various students. Every class will be given the same materials, time, and direction, creating a very open exploration. The sessions will begin in October and production will run through November, with a speculative date for the gallery by the end of the year.
Isabel Cureux is a mixed-media sculptor and painter who creates an experience for every viewer through manipulation of their senses and environment. Her art challenges the audience to see their own experiences through the filter of each piece and begs the question “what happened here?” She enjoys a focus in the creative process of the human mind and the introspective thought processes of an audience as they connect with the piece they are viewing. Isabel studied various art mediums at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and at Wells College in Paris, France. Isabel’s art has been displayed at the Special Collections Library at Virginia Commonwealth University and has been featured at multiple shows in Paris, France, as well as in the United States. She most recently curated Unburied: The Secrets We Keep at Convergence in Alexandria, VA. When she is not creating art, she spends her time accumulating new experiences by reading, exploring nature, and asking her dog to answer life’s toughest questions.
