CRAVE 4 Proposal 2 – The Up-Cycle Collaborative Project

CRAVE 4 Proposal 2 – The Up-Cycle Collaborative Project

-By Joshua Williams

Pamela Underhill’s project is two in one, two separate sculptures with similar themes, taking nature into the community as art. The first project is in Convergence’s own Contemplative Sculpture Garden, which Pamela has been leading. Pamela’s piece for the sculpture garden will be a boardwalk shaped as a re-imagined stream, with rocks, grasses and swirling wood patterns to emulate the movement of water. This experiential piece will invite pedestrians to wander through a woodland setting into a open grass prairie, while creating visual connections between spaces that are separated by a parking lot and a street.

The plan for the second part of the project is to mount a large relief sculpture, made from a variety of recycled/up-cycled materials, in a main hall of the Arlington Discovery school. The wooden structure will integrate the children’s 3-D artwork onto the surface, with room for seasonal work to be changed periodically. The work will follow the VA Standards of Learning (SOL) educational requirements for science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM), by combining creative problem solving and intuitive art making. “Makers” products have been purchased by the school, including solar and battery operated lights and moving pieces.

Pamela has 30-‐‑years experience as a practicing landscape designer and is a life long artist. She has experience working with community groups and homeowner associations as well as individual clients. As an artist, she believes in working with the community. In 2014, Pamela completed a commissioned, collaborative sculpture at the Beverly Hills Church Preschool playground. This work led to an invitation to be the visiting artist, in 2015, at an Arlington public school. She shows her work regularly in local galleries and venues, has been accepted to juried shows and won awards for her work.
