Exploring the Intersection of Art, Faith and the Human experience

Featured Artist, Christina Perry by Vicki VanArsdale

As the Artist in Residence (AIR) at Convergence, Christina Perry is able to live fully as a child of God and an artist. What started as a volunteer position in the gallery quickly grew to a part-time job in the office and being named the new Artist in Residence, an honor she calls “a dream come true.” She explores her creativity in her private studio space in the residence, and she feels like an integral part of the Convergence community. “If people knew how love manifests itself at Convergence, and how that brings healing, they would run –not walk– to Convergence,” she says. Her solo art show, which will feature original paintings and conceptual fashion pieces, will open in November. You can follow Christina’s progress at her blog Flowers One Day.

“Convergence is a place to be real with myself and others, a place of healing, and a place where creativity gives birth to more creativity.”

Christina first heard about Convergence from some of her peers, and was immediately intrigued by a place where Christianity and art can coexist. She says, “Convergence has been a lifesaver. After coming out of the worst year I have ever experienced I came here to find myself the happiest I have ever been in my life. Convergence is God’s way of loving me and showing me immense grace.”

The northern Virginia native admittedly neglected the spiritual part of herself for a while, but felt like God was trying to get her attention. Thanks to Convergence she is able to explore how her relationship with God affects her art making, and how it all fits together. She says, “Convergence is a place to be real with myself and others, a place of healing, and a place where creativity gives birth to more creativity.” She attends the Church at Convergence on Sunday afternoons and also takes personal development classes such as The Prosperous Heart, based on Julia’s Cameron’s book.

With a Master’s Degree in Art Education from the Corcoran College of Art & Design in Washington, D.C. and a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts (Fashion) from Parsons School of Design in New York City, Christina has worked odd jobs and taught art, but realized her heart wasn’t in it. She’s drawn to embroidery and evening gowns -the artistic side of fashion- and painting. Her challenge is how to stay true to herself as an artist while paying the bills. She wants to make a living as a full-time artist and live a creative life, whatever form that may take. In addition to her role at Convergence she co-operates a small, side business called Bijoux FuFu, an online handmade jewelry boutique.
