Learning to See: Fermentation

Watch the Video: Learning to See: Fermentation

A fermenting vegetable is simply submitting to a process that is carried on in the brine in which it is soaking. I believe the process of transformation Jesus describes in the Sermon on the Mount is akin to the process of fermentation.

Think of fermentation as the process by which old ideas, habits and patterns are overturned and one where new insight is introduced to strengthen us and ensure our flourishing.

Wasn’t Pentecost a kind of rapid fermentation? The Spirit of God so intensely soaked into the followers of Jesus that their hearts were transformed; set afire by love for God and a desire to share the good news!

This is a time to ask ourselves; “what are we steeping in?” What is soaking into the pores of our being? Is it God’s word, God’s love and God’s Spirit? Or is it a need for affirmation, productivity, anxiety, fear or anger? What would change if we spent time and energy actively imagining the coming of God’s Kingdom. Fervently praying that God’s will would be done on Earth as it is in Heaven? Do you believe it would really make a difference? Do you believe Jesus as much as you believe in him?
