Exploring the Intersection of Art, Faith and the Human experience

Attending with Julie Shelton Snyder

It may seem unusual to think of studio practice as integral to spiritual practice but for Julie Shelton Snyder, it is exactly that. In her artist statement, Julie writes;

“In my work, I explore movement and stillness, being in control and letting go. Printmaking and painting are the lenses through which I examine these themes. My longing for stillness is a physical and spiritual quest, and this quest has led me to the practice of Centering Prayer. Through art making, I am given the means to express spiritual truths I cannot otherwise articulate. Expressing the ineffable and the invisible is the aim of my work, and I view abstraction as the best means for this expression.”

In the spring of 2018, Julie’s integrated practice led her to a “mokuhanga” focused artist-in-residence program, learning traditional, water-based woodblock print making techniques while living at the base of Mt Fuji. Much of the work currently on display is from this fruitful time.

Julie’s work will hang in the gallery through the fall and winter season at Convergence. The inspiration she finds in the natural world, specifically pattern found in nature, encourages us to connect with the patterns in our own lives and the calling of this season to letting go and reflection.

We are excited for the opportunity for all of you to spend time with Julie this weekend! We have arranged several events to allow Julie to invite us into our own practice of “attending” through her work. Friday night, October 26th, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM we will host an opening reception in honor of her work at the Gallery. Then, on Sunday, October 28th, Julie will lead our 5:00 PM gathering with a woodblock printmaking workshop and meditation on Centering Prayer.
